Lesson 2 :Graduation of properties of elements in the modern periodic table( second part)

Graduation of properties of elements in the modern periodic table
  • The metallic and nonmetallic property:

Properties of Metals

*Most elements are metals. Metals exhibit the following properties:
1- Usually solid at room temperature (mercury is an exception)

2- High luster (shiny)
Metallic appearance

3- Good conductors of heat and electricity

4- Malleable (can be bent and pounded into thin sheets)

5- Ductile (can be drawn into wire)

6- Corrode or oxidize in air and sea water

7- Usually dense (exceptions include lithium, potassium, and sodium)

8- May have very high melting point

9- Readily lose electrons

Properties of Metalloids

Metalloids have some of the properties of metals and some nonmetallic characteristic.
1- Dull or shiny

2- Usually conduct heat and electricity, though not as well as metals

3- Often make good semiconductors

4- Often exist in several forms

5- Often ductile

6- Often malleable

7- May gain or lose electrons in reactions

Properties of Nonmetals

Nonmetals exhibit very different properties from metals.
Nonmetals display some or all of the following characteristics:
1- Dull appearance

2- Usually brittle

3- Poor conductors of heat and electricity

4- Usually less dense, compared to metals

5- Usually low melting point of solids, compared with metals

6- Tend to gain electrons in chemical reactions

Graduation of the metallic and nonmetallic properties in the periodic table
1-The period starts with strong metal, as the atomic number increases in the same period the metallic property decreases gradually until we reach semi metals and then nonmetals start appear and as the atomic number increases, the nonmetallic property increases until we reach the strongest nonmetal in group 7A.

2-Metallic property of the same group increases by the increase of the atomic number as we go from to down due increase in atomic size while nonmetallic property decreases (as in group 7A) due to the decrease of electronegativity values.
